Ulaanbaatar to the Gobi · 116 tours

Ulaanbaatar is the trailhead.

The statue at Tsonjin Boldog by mid-morning, Gorkhi-Terelj by lunch, sand and a ger camp by nightfall. What each trip covers, what it costs, and where to book it.

What everyone books

Seven days out that earn the drive.

Most visitors get a week and spend a good part of it in a van, so the first few bookings decide the trip. These are the seven that fill Mongolian itineraries: the horseman at Tsonjin Boldog, a saddle day in Terelj, the first night with a herder family.

The one day out

An hour east, the country opens.

Leave after breakfast, ride the lift up through the horse’s head at Tsonjin Boldog for the view over the valley, then carry on into Gorkhi-Terelj for Turtle Rock, the steps up to Aryabal and lunch in a ger. Almost every operator runs it as one long day and has you back before dark.

When the sun goes

Nobody warns you about the sky.

Past the last streetlight there is nothing between the grass and the stars, and the Milky Way turns up on cue around ten. Any trip with a night in it buys you that hour: the stove lit, a bowl of airag going round, somebody’s dog barking at nothing.

On four legs

The horse comes with the country.

There are more horses here than people, and the wooden saddle takes some getting used to. Half a day out of Terelj is enough to feel why riding here is nothing like a trail ride at home. Camels are the slower, taller alternative once you reach the sand.

Inside the ger

Dinner is buuz, and the door faces south.

Families along the main routes take guests for the night and the evening runs the same way each time: milk tea first, dumplings folded at the table, the stove fed until somebody says it is time to sleep. Classes in the city teach the same folds.

Before Ulaanbaatar

Kharkhorin sat at the centre of the map.

Erdene Zuu still stands inside its wall of stupas, built out of what the Mongol capital left behind when the court moved south. Trips usually reach it on the second day, after the sand at Elsen Tasarkhai and a stop above the Orkhon river.

Where the tours go

Pick the place, then the trip.

Nearly everything leaves Ulaanbaatar and comes back to it. An hour east is Gorkhi-Terelj. Half a day west are the dunes at Elsen Tasarkhai and the wild horses at Hustai. Kharkhorin is a full day. The Gobi proper wants a week.

How you want to travel

Twelve ways to spend the time.

Ride it, drive it, walk it or sit down and eat it. Each tile opens the full list for that kind of trip, priced and reviewed.

Back before dark

Everything within a day’s drive.

The paved road east reaches the statue and Terelj in ninety minutes. West it is two hours to Hustai and the takhi. Both make an easy day from a hotel in the capital, with the same driver waiting at the end of it.
